Jules loves being around people and has always enjoyed cooking and entertaining. She started cooking at the age of six after carefully watching her mother, grandmother and aunties in the kitchen. She comes from an Italian background and food was always important in her home. Jules loves to share her cooking with guests at home, where they can truly relax and savor an authentic meal. Many times while traveling Jules has felt she was missing out on true local cooking and the true culture of the place. By hosting with Traveling Spoon she hopes to offer that experience to her guests. Jules attended university in the US and later moved to London, where she lived for 11 years. It was there that she started developing her culinary taste and began to experiment with new ingredients. In addition to Brazilian food she loves to cook Indian, Mexican, British, American and other cuisines at home, so if you are craving something other than Brazilian food she is happy to cater to your needs. Join Jules and her husband Tino in their high-rise apartment with views to Lake Igapó. Your culinary experience begins with an ice-cold caipirinha to whet your appetite. You will then sit down together to enjoy traditional Brazilian dishes with Jules' international twist. You might enjoy dishes like pastéis de angu (corn-fritters filled with jerk beef) or chicken escondidinho (chicken shepherd’s pie with cassava mash), barreado with cassava flour and plantains (a typical dish from Paraná state, where Londrina is located – beef stew slowed cooked for 20 hours), moqueca de peixe with pirão (fish in coconut sauce, palm oil and palm hearts) or a traditional feijoada (black bean stew) with all the trimmings. For dessert, indulge in bolo de milho com goibada (corn cake and guava sauce), musse de maracujá (passion fruit mousse) or pudim de leite condensado (creamy flan). A welcome caipirinha is included in the cost of the experience and additional alcohol can be added to your booking. If you book a cooking experience, join Jules in her kitchen to learn to make a traditional caipirinha and then help Jules cook a few Brazilian dishes. Your cooking experience will last about 1-2 hours and you will learn how to prepare cheese bread, onion farofa (toasted cassava flour), desserts and other side dishes. You will also learn how to make a Caipirinha! Depending on what Jules is serving, you may be able to cook starters or side dishes, as many of the main Brazilian dishes she prepares are slow-cooked and take several hours to prepare. Jules also offers and optional market tour add-on where she can take you on a tour of Mercado Shangri-lá. The Mercado is a Londrina tradition, and the best day to visit is a Sunday, when the stalls are full and visitors can take in the cultural diversity of the city.
